Colorado Flood Relief Trip

Our 2014 Disaster Relief Trip is scheduled for Sept. 6-13.  We will be going to Colorado to help with recovery from extensive flooding last year.  They are currently working on everything from cleaning out and repairing houses to new construction.  While our specific site is not yet set, the flood waters devastated parts of three counties north of Denver and work is under way in all of them. For more information or if you are interested in joining the team please contact Ken Blackshear at 442-8556.

Alabama Tornado Relief Trip - In October 2012 a team of 12 volunteers spent a week in Northern Alabama helping the citizens of a small town called Phil Campbell to recover from a tornado destroyed most of the homes in the area and took 26 lives.

Mexico Mission Trip Photos from 2007

In 2007, twenty four people from First UMC traveled to Tecate Mexico to build a home for the Moreno Family. Also joining us were a couple from Yreka and a couple from Yerington, Nevada. It was an intergenerational group -- from 6 years old to several retired people. In three and 1/2 days we built a two room house. The highlights of the trip were the relationships that grew between the team and the family, the team, the family and the neighborhood children and within the team itself.

The Camp

Terry Barber of Yreka headed up the cook team and we were spoiled with delicious food and special treats.

The Moreno Family

Eduarda and Mercedes and their children Estefani, Eduardo and Abraham. Eduardo worked nights at a furniture factory and Mercedes did cleaning for a real estate company during the day. They were so appreciative and helpful. Eduardo worked with us everyday and they fed us delicious Mexican food at lunch time.

The Finishing Touches

Angela Cameron brought her paints and added her art work to the window and door frames. Eduardo requested horses, so they got horses, horse shoes and some pretty flowers.

Communion and Dedication of the house

When Hilary Boudreau, our translator, tried to get a suggestion for a house warming gift Eduardo said that he wanted a bible with all of our names in it and he would pray for us all every night.

The Old and the New Houses

Eduardo & Mercedes purchased the property on which we built the house. The had moved into the small trailer on the property only 15 days before we arrrived. The trailer had a living room, small kitchen and bath and a bedroom. The bedroom and bath were full of building supplies when we arrived. The house had no plumbing. There was running water at a faucet outside and power was hooked up while we were there.
